IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Shinji Ikari.
Character journal: [personal profile] astrobleme
Series name: Neon Genesis Evangelion. Specifically, the movie reimagining: Rebuild of Evangelion. More specifically, the third movie of an eventual tetralogy: Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo.
Canon notes: He will be taken from after the events of Evangelion 3.0, when he's wandering around in a catatonic fugue.

Species: He's human in appearance, but there's reason to believe he might not be fully human. It's complicated. He hopes that he's human, at least. (At the climax of Evangelion 2.0, Shinji forcibly pseudo-evolved himself into something divine. He lost his human body in the process, for many years, before he finally reconstituted in Evangelion 3.0. See below for more details.)

Edit for clarification: He's a brainwashed Angel (a very powerful species on a different evolutionary path from humans) who is was using self-image (kind of like shapeshifting) and a ton of denial to come across as a human, for the most part. He genuinely believes himself to be a human, but some doubts are starting to creep in. He is now aware that he is an Angel, and he's trying to figure out what that means/his powers/etc.

History: There's a lot going on in these movies, so I'm just going to link wiki articles. If anything needs further elaboration, I'll be happy to provide it.

Personality:

🌟 Shinji Ikari is a fourteen-year-old boy (edit: currently seventeen in the game) with a myriad of mental health issues before he's even introduced in the story. His mother is dead, and he's been abandoned by his father, giving him a severe inferiority complex that taints everything he does. He's a quiet, lonely, introverted person who's suffering from untreated depression due to his circumstances. He's insecure, fearful, mistrustful, easily intimidated, and downright unstable when he's pushed too far. For most of the story, he doesn't have any self-esteem to speak of. In new situations or around new people, he tends to speak slowly and sometimes hesitantly, aware of his own awkwardness. However, he is not incapable of caring for other people--he cares a great deal about other people, even the people he's never met. He is not apathetic about anything, even when it might seem like he is. And he can and will form close relationships with people who treat him kindly (Kaworu Nagisa)--or, at the very least, with neutral intent (Rei Ayanami). He will treat them warmly and politely in turn. If someone treats him poorly (his father, or Asuka Langley Shikinami to a lesser extent), he still won't be able to turn away from them. He craves attention from any source, no matter how hurtful or abusive it is.

🌟 Due to his inferiority complex, Shinji is constantly seeking validation from other people. This includes authority figures like his father (Gendo Ikari) and his commanding officer (Misato Katsuragi)--Shinji wants to be useful, important, valuable, and dependable. He's desperate to be loved and treated favorably, even though he doesn't believe he deserves that. Despite hating his father for abandoning him, he wants to be acknowledged by his father. It's part of the reason why he agrees, at his father's request, to pilot a colossal vehicular cyborg known as an Evangelion in defense of the world. His relationships with other children are rooted in the same desire to be recognized and appreciated. It comes across in his gestures of kindness, such as when he prepares food for his friends from school. He's pretty much willing to do anything if someone will approve of him. In essence, he doesn't know how to live for himself. He isn't interested in learning how to live for himself. It's much simpler to follow orders and meet someone else's expectations.

🌟 Shinji doesn't deal well with change. He prefers everything to stay the same, sticking to a routine and knowing what's coming next. He tells Kaworu that, ever since he was little, he has looked to the stars to help him stay calm, specifically because they never change. Kaworu replies, "Instead of seeking change, you prefer a void, merciless abyss of a world. It's just like you." Shinji doesn't deny that, because it's true. He's the kind of person who volunteers for household chores, in the interest of keeping things neat, clean, and orderly: a place for everything, and everything in its place. In a similar vein, he wants to understand the world around him; he hates to be left in the dark about things. The 14-year timeskip between Evangelion 2.0 and Evangelion 3.0 changed the world so drastically that he hardly recognizes anyone or anything, making him feel confused, alienated, and resentful. He demands to know what the hell happened during the timeskip... However, contrary to that, Shinji blatantly overlooks the strangest aspects of Kaworu without asking about them (such as Kaworu being able to breathe poisonous air that Shinji can't). It could be that he fears upsetting Kaworu by asking too many prying questions. Being friends with Kaworu is more important than understanding Kaworu's eccentricities.

🌟 Out of all of Shinji's relationships, the one he has with Kaworu in Evangelion 3.0 is arguably the most important. Not only does Kaworu treat Shinji kindly and gently, he doesn't coddle Shinji or act like Shinji is a helpless victim of circumstance. He encourages Shinji to go at his own pace, such as with learning the piano, while instilling in Shinji an actual sense of self-worth and hope for the future. Shinji's mentality improves with Kaworu's tutelage and friendship by leaps and bounds. Somewhat uncharacteristically, he trusts Kaworu in every sense of the word, opening up to him about deeply personal subjects. He compliments Kaworu more than once for being "amazing" and "knowing everything." Eventually, they have a high enough affinity to pilot a special dual-pilot Evangelion together. (Of course, their partnership ends in tragedy with Kaworu's death. More on that later.)

🌟 As part of his dependence on other people, Shinji has a curiously strong protective streak. It's especially obvious around the girls in his life. Instead of being chivalrous in the masculine sense, Shinji is fiercely maternal. He's willing to rebel against his father when he's forced to attack and maim Asuka while piloting an Evangelion. He's willing to shed his own humanity if it means protecting Rei from an Angel that's threatening to destroy her. The intensity of his behavior could be compared to a mother lifting the burning wreckage of a car to save her trapped daughter.

🌟 To reiterate: Shinji is not without moments of determination. "I mustn't run away" is a famous mantra of his, and for good reason. (However, it should be noted that he has run away from reality a number of times. He can run away from situations that are immensely stressful, such as Misato's cruel, callous treatment of him in Evangelion 3.0. If he feels personally wronged for whatever reason, he will feel justified in running away.) Piloting an Evangelion to fight the Angels is something that gives him a much-needed purpose. He wants to do the "right thing," protecting people and supposedly saving the world. Even when a battle seems hopeless, he will not back down--sometimes defying orders from his commanding offer to retreat. If he sees someone in pain or danger, he will not hesitate to go to them and rescue them. Of course, his determination can be detrimental when he's unwilling to listen to people who know better: defying orders, ignoring dire warnings, and so on. It wouldn't be wrong to say that stubbornness is his fatal flaw. It has gotten him into a lot of trouble--up to and including destroying the world. Yikes.

🌟 Shinji has caused plenty of collateral damage as an Evangelion pilot. He has a great deal of remorse for his actions, though, so crushing guilt defines him. It contributes to bitterness, self-hatred, insomnia, mental breakdowns, and chronic PTSD-like symptoms in his everyday life. He has injured civilians, his comrades, his friends, the planet itself... The worst of the worst has to be when his foolhardy actions lead to the death of Kaworu, his closest friend of all time. Kaworu's death is so traumatizing that Shinji is left in a catatonic fugue at the end of Evangelion 3.0, unable to handle the gravity of what he has done. It's in this mentally broken state that he will be joining Drift Fleet. The great thing about starting at rock bottom is that the only way to go is up.

Abilities: At first glance, Shinji seems to be a plain human boy with noodly arms. However...

1) Learning ability. Whether it's because he's a prodigy or he's just that determined, Shinji can learn whatever is necessary for him to learn in a remarkably short amount of time. For example, he effortlessly pilots an Evangelion with no prior training right from the outset. (In comparison, Asuka trained for almost her entire life to be an Evangelion pilot.) After less than a month of drills, he proves himself to be an expert sharpshooter when he manually targets and shoots down the Angel Ramiel in the heat of battle. More or less instantly, he goes from saying "I don't know how to play [the piano]" to performing a gorgeous piano duet with Kaworu. If Shinji feels the need to learn something, it's likely that he can and will do so with shocking, maybe even supernatural efficiency. It's just a matter of him having the proper incentive to do so (such as receiving someone else's approval).

2) Tolerance for pain. It's unbelievably high. An Evangelion's nerves are connected directly to the pilot's, so what damage is inflicted on the Evangelion is psychically (and sometimes literally) experienced by the pilot. Shinji has successfully fought his way through being impaled, crushed, burned, amputated, and other devastating injuries.

3) Curse of Eva. A mysterious affliction has halted Shinji's physical growth at fourteen years old.

4) Cooking skills. People seem to like his food a lot.

5) Impact trigger. If Shinji gets "too emotional" while inside an Evangelion, he can cause a phenomenon known as an Impact to occur. This is basically a world-ending event where all matter surrounding him is turned into an energy condensate that's worse than a chain of thermonuclear explosions. Triggering an Impact has happened multiple times, and it seems to be out of his control. This will not be happening within the context of Drift Fleet.

6) Awakening. In addition to being an Impact trigger, Shinji has the mostly unexplained ability to "Awaken" and tap into godlike powers. He gains shining red eyes, enhanced strength, and then pseudo-evolves himself into a reality-warping being of pure energy. It causes the Evangelion he's piloting to transform into the closest thing to God in the Neon Genesis Evangelion universe. This cannot happen without extreme--extremely extreme--emotional suffering. Regardless, these reality-warping powers will be disabled for Drift Fleet.

Augment Skillset: Pilot augment.
Sample: Shinji & Kaworu, set during Evangelion 3.0. However, he will be entering the game in a mentally broken state. Initially, he will be mostly nonverbal and very distant, but that's going to improve.
